I'm not sure how to really go about getting this started, but this site obviously needs a little more activity to kick off the 2014 riding season. So, I'm going to take it upon myself to reach out to what I have to imagine are at least a couple hundred like-minded ATV enthusiasts looking for other people to ride with this year.
I often see trucks with a few dirt bikes or four-wheelers loaded up, heading off to somewhere fun. It kills me to see because my poor four-wheeler is sitting at home in the garage, ready and waiting to be used and abused.
Well, I don't know about you, but taking my four-wheeler out solo doesn't seem like a great idea considering the mud pits this part of the country is surrounded by and the likelihood that I will end up stuck in one. Stuck, waiting for some random passer-by to come along so I can beg for help. Not my idea of fun. Now, I don't want to make it sound like I don't have any friends... turns out, I'm a pretty likable guy... but my bonehead friends don't seem to prioritize motorcycles, dirt bikes and ATVs as much as I do. Last summer, I rode a CRF250 at my buddy's house on the track every weekend or two, until he sold his bike. Game over.
This year, I want to hit the trails. First things first... find the trails. To do this, I used a little app that pinpoints every trail in every state. You can see what I plotted at the link below... Its a google map thing. I even added details about how many miles/acres the property has so I can skip those, "come ride in my mud puddle", places. Check it out -- mapsengine.google.com/map/edit?mid=ziKCdBOO40WM.kVFU2eqt7M38
Next, I need to find some cool people to ride with. That's where you come in. Now, no offense to anyone, but I'm not up for riding with just anyone. I did that once and found myself spending more time watching terrible riders be terrible riders than I did on the trail. I'm looking for some riders that have enough experience to keep the pace going, with the exception of a few beer stops along the way (that's legal, right?). Don't get me wrong- everyone has a place on the trail, and I love anyone that likes to get out in the dirt and spin tires, but I'm really interested in finding a group of people that are of similar interest, ready to ride.
I'm riding a Yamaha 660 Raptor, but will take that sob anywhere I have to. I'm thinking about putting a winch on it for trail riding though, since the chance of deep mud is pretty likely at times. I really don't care if you're riding a dirt bike or 4x4 quad, but would like to ride with some people that know how to operate their machines.
If you've read all this, and are okay with adding +1 to your existing group, that is fine too; or if you're a loner like me, looking for other people to ride with, hit me up.
I'm hoping this post doesn't fall on deaf ears... If you ride, and are looking for more friends that ride, post a response with your a/s/l, machine and a few details about your riding experience. Maybe we can plan a group ride to one of the many locations on the list. I'm leaning towards an early spring visit to the Finger Lakes State Park or St. Joe State Park... they seem to be the biggest riding areas around. Of course, always open for recommendations- feel free to post with your favorite places.
Thanks for reading my book-
Mike
